The grapevine has been cultivated in the fertile and rich soil of Crete since the time of ancient Courites
The history of the Tripodaki winery goes back a century ago with its origins traced in 1907, when the grandfather of the current wine distiller, both named Antonios Em. Tripodakis, was the first to be involved with the viticulture. The traditional way of vinification followed, using wooden barrels manufactured by artisans from Santorini, at the region of Kourfalona Kissamou in Chania.
Nowadays, the privately-owned vineyards of the Tripodaki family are located in Leivadeia, in Tyflo, in Kalathia and in Harhaliana at the region of Kissamos Chanion in Crete. Indigenous vine varieties are cultivated in the above vineyards such as: Romeiko, Koumenato, Liatiko, Muscat and Sultanina.
His steps were followed by his sons, Emmanouil and Konstantinos Tripodakis who were distinguished for their progress and in 1935, were awarded the Silver Medal at the Thessaloniki International Fair. In 1961, Antonios K. Tripodakis took over the family tradition at the steps of his ancestors and since 1964 he operates a modern winery unit in Elefsina.
